Alloying element in reactor steels and stainless steels. Thermal absorption (σ_a = 13.3 b) is relatively high, making it a parasitic absorber. Mn-54 (t₁/₂ = 312 d) and Mn-56 (t₁/₂ = 2.58 h) are significant activation products in structural materials.
