Gadolinium Oxide

Gd₂O₃

Absorbers

Density: 7.41 g/cm³

Gadolinium oxide burnable absorber. Gd-155 and Gd-157 have the largest thermal neutron capture cross sections of any stable nuclides (~61,000 and ~254,000 barns).

Notes

Gd-155 (σ_a ≈ 61,000 b) and Gd-157 (σ_a ≈ 254,000 b) are the primary absorbing isotopes. Used as a burnable poison mixed directly into UO2 fuel pellets (typically 2–10 wt% Gd2O3).
